U.S. Air Purifier Act: Technical Requirements and Public Health Considerations

As air pollution becomes an increasingly serious problem around the world, the incidence of respiratory diseases is also rising. This makes air purifiers a must-have for many homes and offices. As one of the world's largest economies, the U.S. government has strict requirements for the technical standards of air purifiers. These requirements are mainly based on the Clean Air Act and California's relevant regulations.

The Clean Air Act is a federal law enacted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to control and reduce air pollution and protect public health and environmental quality. The act not only established air quality standards but also required states to implement programs to meet those standards. Among them, as a device that can improve indoor air quality, the performance and energy efficiency of air purifiers are also subject to strict supervision.

According to the Clean Air Act, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has set specific requirements for air purifiers, including but not limited to filtration efficiency, energy consumption, and noise control. In addition, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) clearly regulates the energy efficiency of air purifiers under the Energy Policy and Conservation Act (EPCA) of 1975. In 2021, DOE released a revised draft technical regulation, further improving the energy efficiency requirements for air purifiers.

In California, the local air quality problem is even more serious due to the unique geographical and climatic conditions. As a result, the California Air Commission has set stricter standards for air purifiers. California’s regulations not only focus on a product’s energy efficiency, but also emphasize key performance indicators such as its ability to remove pollutants. Any air purifier product that wants to enter the California market must meet these standards.

For manufacturers in other countries and here in the United States, meeting these technical and product requirements is not easy. But considering the public health and welfare behind these regulations, it is undoubtedly a goal worth investing resources to achieve. From a broader perspective, improving the performance and energy efficiency of air purifiers will also help promote innovation and development in the entire industry.

In general, the U.S. government has provided consumers with safer and more efficient product choices through a series of bills and technical requirements. Although this is a challenge for manufacturers, it undoubtedly provides strong support for solving the global air pollution problem.
