The amount of bacteria in tap water varies depending on the source, treatment, and distribution of the water. Generally,
tap water is disinfected with chlorine or ozone to kill most of the harmful bacteria. The national standard for the total number
of bacteria in drinking water in China is not more than 100 CFU per milliliter1.
Ozone is a powerful oxidant that can destroy almost all bacteria in water. The international conventional standard for ozone
disinfection of tap water is 0.4 mg/L of dissolved ozone, maintained for 4 minutes, which is equivalent to a CT value of 1.6. The residual
ozone concentration in water should be between 0.1 and 0.5 mg/L for 5 to 10 minutes to achieve disinfection2.
Ozone water disinfection is rapid, and the disinfection effect occurs in an instant. In clear water, once the ozone concentration
reaches 0.43 mg/L, it can kill 100% of Escherichia coli at 20°C, and only 0.36 mg/L is required at 10°C. At a concentration of 4 mg/L,
the inactivation rate of hepatitis B virus is 100% within 1 minute3.
